PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom
Portland State University
With design sensitivity, renovations can modernize the interior of a building in a way that is contemporary but also honors its historic roots. The renovation of the PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom is an example of an interior and systems upgrade that integrated seamlessly into the design while maintaining sensitivity to the building’s original character.
This complex renovation included extensive work on the ballroom stage, dressing rooms, and servery. A comprehensive upgrade of the lighting, sound system and finishes, as well as modifications to the mechanical system, were completed. All of the spaces were also brought into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Since PSU had limited design criteria at the time, we worked with them to provide language for their standard specifications for construction waste recycling as well as hardware and finishes. Working closely with the contractor and client throughout the design and construction phases, the project team was able to deliver an award-winning project on an extremely aggressive budget and schedule.
