KAIST Student Center

Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

With expanding enrollment of international students, this South Korean university asked Deca to design a new student center that would accommodate their social needs and provide a home base for informal activities and interaction. The new two-story building blends contemporary design with modern materials and sustainable building practices. It juxtaposes an exposed concrete structure with warm wood finishes on the interior, while the exterior cladding consists of concrete, glass, and metal panels. The center houses a lounge, cafeteria, classrooms, seminar rooms, a large multi-purpose room for lectures, dances, and parties, administration offices, a children’s nursery, and a non-denominational chapel. The heart of the building is the central lounge, which serves as a comfortable “living room” for students.
